GENERAL SANTOS CITY – For six years now, Goldenstate College-General Santos has been successfully holding its annual Skills Olympics – a battle for culinary and HRM skills usually competed amongst High School and College students alike. The participants are coming from General Santos City, Sarangani Province, South Cotabato Province, and as far as Davao Provinces (including the City of Davao).
This year’s competition, held at the Robinson’s Place General Santos on September 1 and 2, 2011, is a two-day event featuring 10 events namely TUNA SASHIMI PLATTER, CAKE DECORATING, ANGEL HAIR PASTA, TABLE NAPKIN FOLDING, WAITER’S RELAY, TABLE SKIRTING, FLOWER ARRANGEMENT, BARTENDING (COCKTAIL), BREAD DISPLAY, and TABLE SETTING). Day 1 was intended for the High School Participants while Day 2 featured College students-participants.
Philippine Foremost Milling Corporation, Tanduay Rhum, Ajinomoto are some of these year’s kind sponsors who shelled out prizes for the winners on the different categories. They were Goldenstate College’s partners in the realization of the said event. KORONADAL NATIONAL COMPREHENSIVE HIGH SCHOOL (KNCHS) is this year’s Champions (High School Category) followed by Poblacion Polomolok National High (1st Runner-up), Malandag National High (2nd Runner-up), and Lagao National High (3rd Runner-up). On the other hand, GREEN VALLEY COLLEGE (Koronadal City) was declared as the Champions (College Category) followed by St. Joseph Technical School of Davao (1st Runner-up), South Point College of Arts and Technology of Gensan (2nd Runner-up), and Cor Jesu College of Digos City (3rd Runner-up).
As fierce as the competition was there, judges from Metro Manila who were experts in their fields found it hard to hand their verdict on the competitors’ output since yearly, the students’ skills keep improving. Mr. Rudy Cabardo (former Faculty Member, National University, University of Batangas, Arellano University), Mr. Alejandro Paez (National Technical Sales Manager-Phil. Foremost Milling Corp.), Mr. Adrian Fabella (Professor, Las Pinas College), Chef Edd Tawagon (Culinary Professor, La Consolacion College-Manila), Mr. Mitchell Borja (Dean, University of Batangas), and Mr. Willie Bejar (Baking Expert) composed the Panel of the Board of Judges in the two-day event.
